Sumingashi Paper Marbling
Last week, kindergarten continued their science study of wood and paper and STEAM Lab. We decided to make bookmarks from paper, using a special art technique popular in Japan. This technique, Sumingashi, is a way to marble paper using special ink and water. Students practiced AB patterns by dropping two colors in a pattern into the water. The ink, unlike most inks, floats and does not combine with the water or among other colors. Next students gently swirled the colors around and dipped their paper on top. The inks transfer onto the paper and make beautiful designs!
