Bionic Hands

Third through fifth grade STEAM Surge has been busy the past two weeks designing and constructing bionic hands! The students used cardboard, straws, and string, to mimic the joints of the fingers and build a hand that moved with the pull of strings. I prepped the project by cutting out the cardboard for the arm and fingers. Students then stapled and taped the fingers on. Next, they folded the fingers where the joints naturally are in each finger. Next, they taped cut peices of straw onto each joint segment. Next, they weaved the string through the straw joints in each finger. At the end, I helped them loop holes for their real fingers to control the strings and they added a bar to secure their arm in place. This project turned out great and students were really happy with the results!
