Roller Coaster Physics

K-2 STEAM Surge learned about the physics of a roller coaster. We began by watching a short video about the forces in a roller coaster and the science of what happens on a ride. Next, as a class, we worked to design a roller coaster on the computer that would keep us safe and that would allow the right amount of force to keep the car on the track and people inside their seats! Students thought it was pretty funny each time our car would fall off the track or crash. However, after about six tries, we found the right combination of hills, ramps, and loops. After, students were given foam insulator tubing to create their own marble roller coasters. Based on the laughter around the room, I'd say this was a HUGE hit with students!
