Hour of Code

Last week was the Hour of Code, a global initiative to get kids spending some time learning and practicing computer coding. Code.org was a great resource for us. This is our third year participating in the HOC and the kids love it. Code.org uses blockly, a kid friendly drag and drop coding system to teach coding and this year, added a lesson that includes a mix of Java Script with blockly for a more challenging experience. The website really has teaching computer coding to kids down to a fine science. The pace is right on, they use popular characters, like Star Wars and Minecraft, and the kids can earn awards and certificates along the way. First through fifth grade all used code.org and some of the older students progressed to some other websites where they took on the challenge of writing in full Java Script.
