Superhero Zip Lines

Earlier this week, I started a superhero themed unit with second grade students. Our first challenge was designing a zip line for Spider-Man! Students first watched a video on the longest Zip line. Next, they brainstormed how they could make a zip line with the bag of materials provided (see photo below). Students drew up their design plans. Next, they created their lines. We also talked about how the angle may influence the speed or length of travel of Spider-Man. Finally, students tested their designs, using an iPad to record the seconds from start to finish and drawing any notable observations. Students had plenty of time to modify, retest, and even race their lines.
