Accessible Playground Design

Earlier this month, I read Just Because by Rebecca Elliott to the kindergarten students. This story tells a beautiful story of a character, Clemmie who is an amazing sister, loves to hear stories, has very big curly hair, and is in a wheelchair. We discussed all the characteristics that make Clemmie awesome. We then talked about our personal experiences with a playground (what our favorite parts were, why we liked them). Next, we thought about our experience vs. what Clemmie or another person who uses a wheelchair might experience. We then started brainstorming types of playground equipment and toys that Clemmie would enjoy and be able to fully use. Students drew their plans, talked with their friends about it, then created prototypes. I sent a Tweet to the author of the book, Rebecca Elliott and she even responded! So great!
